9/11 in America

Perspective

Many will ask the question today, “Where were you on 9/11?” and many Americans will be able to answer the question without having to stop and think! These are the days/events that are forever cemented in our hearts and minds. The days that follow are as well: a mixture of images, thoughts, emotions and decisions.

Theories about who all was involved, who is to blame, what should have been done, what was done well, how to prevent a similar attack in the future… they will also be expressed and discussed today: and that is as it should be. History is something that we should study and learn from. Some debates will be heated – carried out by stubborn individuals who are set in their opinions and have no desire to hear or learn from others. Hopefully, other discussions will be civil; giving and taking, considering the knowledge, ideas and thoughts of others. These discussions will benefit not only the country but individuals who are willing to learn and grow while interacting with others and gaining insight from their perspectives.

My thoughts this morning go directly to the families personally impacted by the losses of 9/11. Year after the year, the anniversary brings up the shock, the pain, the grief and every family member who lost loved ones is reliving to some degree the horror of that day. The shock is no longer shock, but the effects of the shock lingers within their systems as very real wounds and they will feel it today. The pain is no longer a new pain: it is a lingering ache that will never fade. The grief – well, it ebbs and flows – sometimes in overwhelming waves and sometimes in soft tears of memories that will forever remain. My prayer for the family members today is that those of us who watched it all unfold on our television screens, those of us who read about the details later, those of us who felt the pain for our country and for the strangers around us – I pray that we will compassionately uphold them in prayers, be respectful of their lingering emotions and yes; learn from this experience~
